Tackle your To-Be-Read list together or find a new favorite with new friends.

Johnson County Library hosts book groups year-round, for all ages, and all topics and genres and we have online book clubs, too! Whether we're reading the classics or the latest smash hits, we provide copies, a cozy space for all, and lively discussions and activities. Just register to attend!

Kid Book Club

Calling all first, second and third graders! If you love reading, join us for a fun book exploration. Each session, we’ll dive into a new book with a staff-led talk and activity inspired by the story.

Space is limited so registration for each discussion is required. Copies of the books are available for participants while supplies last. Staff will contact participants to distribute books.

May: The Dino Files: A Mysterious Egg

Frank, aided by his cousin Sam and cat Saurus, cares for a newly-hatched dinosaur while trying to keep its existence secret.

June: Soccer Snub

Quincy has worked hard to join the A-level soccer team his friend Will plays on, but can their friendship withstand competition?

July: Magic Tree House: Revolutionary War on Wednesday

Using their magic tree house, Jack and Annie travel back to the time of the American Revolution to help Washington cross the Delaware River.

Tween Book Club

Tweens ages 9-13: Let’s get together to read new books, discuss ideas and characters and meet other book lovers! Each session features a new book, a staff-led group discussion and a related activity. Can't make it in person? We have an online book club, too!

Space is limited so registration for each discussion is required. Copies of the books are available for participants while supplies last. Staff will contact participants to distribute books.

May: Deadlands: Hunted

An unlikely group of dinosaur misfits discover a deadly secret and must band together to save their herbivore kingdoms from doom.

June: Booked

Nick, 12, loves soccer and hates books, but soon learns the power of words as he wrestles with home life, bullies, and impressing a girl.

July: Sybil Ludington: Revolutionary War Rider

An account of the 16 year old girl, trained with a musket, who rode alone over 40 miles to bring out the militia before the battle.

August: Borders

A family refuses to say they are American or Canadian at the border and end up in limbo when they claim their citizenship as Blackfoot.

American Girl Book Club

Explore key moments in American history through the eyes of relatable characters in this engaging book club. American Girl books offer unique historical insights from a girl’s point of view. Join us to read, participate in an activity and make new friends. Best for ages 8-12.

May: Kaya: The Journey Begins

Kaya's Nez Perce people are known for their skill with horses, and Kaya hopes to become the best horsewoman in the village. 

June: Maritza: Lead with Your Heart

7th grader Maritza learns to lead on and off the soccer field as she organizes support for families detained by immigration officials.

Life Long Ago: A Historical Girls Workshop

What was it like to grow up as a girl in the 1700s? Bring a doll and friend to explore stories and hands-on activities from the past.

August: Kit: Read All About It!

Kit Kittredge has a nose for news, but she never dreamed that the news about the hard times of the Depression would become her own story.

Online Teen Book Club

Join our online Teen Book Club and connect with other community readers. Each month, we’ll explore a new title ranging from bestselling teen books to graphic novels. Come together on Monday evenings to share thoughts, ask questions and dive into a thrilling story. A staff member will lead the group in a Zoom discussion. Participants who live in Johnson County will receive a copy of the book about a month before the meeting. Registration is required.

May: Furia

Are you involved in a book group and looking for more titles to try? The Library can help! We have Book Group Kits available at the Central Resource Library with 10-15 copies of one title that can be checked out for up to six weeks.

Adults Book Discussions

Explore a wide-ranging selection of books and build community with fellow readers at Johnson County Library’s Book Discussions. Book choices include patron suggestions, titles connected to other Library programs and books selected for their unique perspectives, rich storytelling and varied characters. Whether you’re a casual reader or a dedicated book lover, there’s always something new to discover. Space is limited so registration for each discussion is required. Copies are available to borrow for all participants.
