Interlibrary Loan

Can’t find what you’re looking for?

Johnson County Library's Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service borrows items for you from other libraries. Find books, audiovisual materials, copies of documents and a number of other miscellaneous items not owned by Johnson County Library. ILL literally gives you the ability to checkout from libraries around the world.

Borrowing Information

You can log into your ILLiad account to use WorldCat FirstSearch to request items, check the status of requests, or modify requests.

Here's how: Log in using your library card number and PIN/password. Please note:

  • You must be a Johnson County Library resident to use this service. (Olathe residents should use Olathe Public Library's ILL service.)
  • You can have up to 15 active requests at one time – requests stay active until items arrive back at the InterLibrary Loan office and are cleared.
  • All ILL items come wrapped with a white band for tracking purposes. Please do not remove this tracking band or you could be responsible for the fees associated with lost materials.
  • Educators: if requesting multiple copies, please indicate in the notes field that this is an Educator Card so that ILL staff do not delete the request as a duplicate.

Please refer to "How do I request an Interlibrary Loan?" in the FAQ below.

Picking up and Returning your ILL

Items must be picked up and returned at Johnson County Library locations. To pick up or return at Olathe locations, place requests via Olathe Library Interlibrary Loan.

Loan Period

ILL Items can be checked out for three weeks. We are unable to grant renewals. Your borrowed ILL item(s) must be returned by the end of the three week period. If you are not finished, don't worry. Contact us and we will place a new request for the item.

It can take up to 6 weeks for items to arrive from the owning library. Please be aware your ILL requests may take longer than usual to arrive from or return to other libraries as shipping and courier times have increased. Thank you for your patience as we process your requests as quickly as possible

Fees

Borrowing Interlibrary Loan materials through Johnson County Library is almost always free. Lending Libraries may set their own fees, in which case you will be asked if you are willing to pay to borrow the item. Every attempt will be made to find libraries that have no charges.

If your Interlibrary Loan item is overdue for 30 days, you will be charged a $200 default fee. This amount may not reflect the actual cost of the item- costs are set by the lending library. Please contact us if you have a default fee for an overdue ILL item on your account.
