Music Monday: Black Mariah Theater

Happy Music Monday! We are so happy to bring you local music recorded live. You might notice that we've outgrown our MakerSpace sound booth! We've discovered that our branches, like the Leawood Pioneer Library, are big enough to accommodate larger bands and books absorb sound perfectly. Who knew that a Library is such an awesome sound recording studio. But don't take out word for it, listen for yourself! Here's Black Mariah Theater performing:

1. Honey Stop

2. Emerald Cut

3. You're No Good

Memorial Day Music Monday: Americana

Julie Bennett Hume's musical journey has taken many twists and turns. A folk artist who began writing songs when she was a high school senior, Hume became grounded in bluegrass, Appalachian and Cajun music, sharpening her skills as a singer, bassist and guitarist. We're fortunate to share an interview with Hume about her life's work, her new album, the aptly titled Late Bloomer, and what inspires her.

Please introduce yourself. Describe your music for new listeners.

Music Monday: Musician and Artist Sterling Witt

Melodic and aggressive, abrasive and pretty, political and universal, the music of Sterling Witt has many starting points. In addition to writing catchy, rocking and thought-provoking tunes, Witt is an accomplished painter whose visual work is as vibrant as his music. His art is currently on display at our Lackman location.

Happy Music Monday!

Ry Kincaid's sense of humor is perfectly suited to his craft. The writer of soon to be classic children's songs "Don't Eat Your Boogers," "Storytime is Not A Contact Sport" and "You're A Deductible" is also a natural performer, playwright and talented musician. Kincaid makes the kind of music that brings smiles to the faces of kids and their parents -- no easy task. We're fortunate to share an interview with Ry Kincaid on Listen Local.

In honor of Children's Day on Monday, April 30

Don't let the 'children's music' label fool you. Coming to us from Lenexa, Kansas, Jane Christison is a serious musician, performer and songwriter -- seriously fun, silly and experienced. While at UMKC working on a Bachelor of Music degree in Accordion Performance, Christison had the opportunity to travel internationally as part of the USO.

Music Monday!

Pablo Sanhueza is many things: bandleader, Latin jazz percussionist, musical scholar, master and student. The Chilean-born musician is perhaps best known for leading the KC Salsa & Latin Jazz All Stars ensemble, but his musical imprint does not stop there.  He is a songwriter who has toured widely, sharing the stage with the likes of Poncho Sanchez, Titos Sompa, Dave Valentin and Bobby Watson. We are honored to share an interview with Sanhueza. Enjoy!

Music Monday! Get your Schwervon!

What is Schwervon!? Nothing less than Shawnee, Kansas's contribution to the world of ultra-catchy indie rock. Formed by Matt Roth and Nan Turner in New York City, Schwervon! are a prolific musical force with a catalog chock full of albums, EPs and singles, not to mention their own side projects and national and international touring schedules. They have worked with such indie luminaries as Belle and Sebastian, Guided by Voices and Speedy Ortiz. We are excited to share an interview with the couple about their recent European tour and other subjects.
