1. HAVE FUN WITH BOOKS
Talking with your children develops comprehension skills that will help them understand what they read. Here are the books we read at storytime:
Did My Mother Do That? by Sharon Holt ©2010
Adventure Annie Goes to Work by Toni Buzzeo ©2009
When Dinosaurs came with Everything by Elise Broach ©2007
Mom Pie by Lynne Jonell ©2001
2. NOTICE PRINT ALL AROUND YOU
Check out our Staff Picks for Notice Print All Around You.
Provide a print-rich environment. Have books, newspapers, magazines and other reading materials throughout your home.
Visit your public library often and have your child help you pick out books that interest them.
3. TALK, TALK, TALK
Check out our Staff Picks for Talk, Talk, Talk.
Talk about the meaning of new words. Children who are read to often have a larger vocabulary and better language
and comprehension skills when they enter kindergarten making it easier to recognize words as they begin to read.
4. TELL STORIES ABOUT EVERYTHING
Have you tried TumbleBooks, an online library of read-along stories, videos and language games for use on computer, Ipad and mobile devices?
Point to some of the words in the books as you read, especially words that are repeated.
5. LOOK FOR LETTERS EVERYWHERE
Try some fun alphabet activities from the Corinth Youth Services Pinterest page.
6. TAKE TIME TO RHYME, SING AND PLAY WORD GAMES
Rhymes help children hear the sounds that make up words, a skill that helps children sound out words as they begin to read.
In most songs each syllable in a word gets a different note. Here are the rhymes and songs from today:
Welcome To Storytime! [tune: Twinkle, Twinkle]
Welcome, welcome everyone,
Now we're here, let's have some fun.
First we'll sing the ABC's,
then we'll read and sing with me.
Welcome, welcome, everyone,
Now we're here let's have some fun.
Mommy, Mommy
Mommy, mommy, lets sweep the floor. [pretend to sweep]
Mommy, mommy, let's go to the store. [Pretend to drive]
Mommy, mommy, let's bake a cake. [Pretend to mix ingredients]
Mommy, mommy, let's take a break. Wipe brow and whisper "whew"]
Mommy, mommy, loves me so. [Draw heart in air]
Mommy, mommy, watch me grow. [Stretch arms up high]
Mommy, mommy, turn out the light. [Make click sound]
Mommy, mommy, say good-night. [Rest head on hands]
M-O-M-M-Y [Tune: Bingo]
I love her and she love me,
and Mommy is her name-o,
M-O_M_M_Y , M-O_M_M_Y
M-O_M_M_Y and Mommy is her name-O.
I Love My Mommy [Tune: Up on the Housetop]
I love my mommy, yes siree!
She is very good to me!
She makes me cookies and yummy treats,
That's my mom and she's real neat!
Oh, oh, oh, who wouldn't know,
Oh, oh, oh, who wouldn't know,
I love my mommy and she loves me,
That's the way it's supposed to be!
M-O-M [Tune: "Three Blind Mice"]
M-O-M spells Mom, M-O-M spells Mom,
We love our mom, we love our mom,
She reads us stories every night,
She tucks us in, oh so tight,
Gives a kiss, turns out the light,
We love our Mom, M-O-M spells Mom.
Mother's
We love mothers, we love mothers
Yes, we do, yes we do Mothers are for hugging
Mothers are for kissing We love you, yes we do!
Mommy Loves Me [Tune: "Jesus Loves me" ]
Mommy loves me this I know,
for she always tells me so.
She holds me when I'm scared or sad.
She understands me, when I'm mad.
Yes, Mommy loves me. Yes, Mommy loves me.
Yes, Mommy loves me, she always tells me so!
I Really Love My Mother! [Tune: "The More We Get Together"]
I really love my mother, my mother, my mother.
I really love my mother, I love her so much.
She feeds me and clothes me, she hugs me and kisses me.
I really love my mother, I love her so much my.
The More We Read Together [Tune: “The More We Get Together” ]
The more we read together, together, together,
The more we read together, the better it is!
'Cause reading and singing and talking together,
Is how you learn the six skills for reading by six.
