"Rainy Days" Preschool Storytime

1. HAVE FUN WITH BOOKS
Here are the books we read at storytime:

The Falling Raindrop by Neil Johnson & Joel Chin ©2005
Rainy Day! by Patricia Lakin ©2007
Mushroom in the Rain by Mirra Ginsburg ©1974
Move Over Rover! by Karen Beaumont ©2006

2. NOTICE PRINT ALL AROUND YOU
Check out our Staff Picks for Notice Print All Around You.

3. TALK, TALK, TALK
Check out our Staff Picks for Talk, Talk, Talk.
Talk with your child about what is going on around you. Research shows that children who have larger vocabularies are better readers.
Hearing the words in conversation helps children recognize written words and understand what they read.

4. TELL STORIES ABOUT EVERYTHING
Have you tried TumbleBooks, an online library of read-along stories, videos and language games for use on computer, Ipad and mobile devices?
In addition to narrative stories, choose books without words and encourage children to tell the story from the pictures.
Noah's Ark by Peter Spier is a wordless version of this well-known story about the rain that flooded the earth.

5LOOK FOR LETTERS EVERYWHERE
Try some fun alphabet activities from the Corinth Youth Services Pinterest page.

6. TAKE TIME TO RHYME, SING AND PLAY WORD GAMES
Here are the rhymes and songs from today:

Welcome To Storytime!   [tune: Twinkle, Twinkle]

Welcome, welcome everyone,
Now we're here, let's have some fun.
First we'll sing the ABC's,
then we'll read and sing with me.
Welcome, welcome, everyone,
Now we're here let's have some fun.

Rain Song

Blow, blow, blow the wind, Gently through the trees.
First a little drop of rain hit the ground, Tap, Tap, Tap. (Tap fingers)
Then another drop of rain hit the ground, Tap, Tap, Tap. (Tap fingers)
Then another and another and another and another,
And pretty soon we hear a different sound, SPLASH! (Clap hands)

Rain is Falling on You [Tune: Happy Birthday]

Rain is falling on you, rain is falling on me,
Rain is falling on everyone, rain is falling, YIPPEE!!!

Rain on my Umbrella [Tune: Frere Jacques ]

Drip, drip, drop, drop, Drip, drip, drop, drop,
Drip, drip, drop, drip, drip, drop.
Rain on my umbrella, Rain on my umbrella,
Never stops. Drip, drip, drop.

Special Umbrella

The first umbrella is red. It keeps rain off my head.
The second umbrella is blue. It is the first one I knew.
The third umbrella is yellow, for a very lucky fellow.
The fourth umbrella is green, fit for a king or a queen!
The fifth umbrella is brown, I will carry it into town.

Rain

Pitter-pat, pitter-pat [drum fingers on the floor]
The rain goes on for hours and though it keeps me in the house
It's very [hold up two fists, palms up]
Good for [open fists]
Flowers [raise and turn hands upwards]

Pitter Patter Rain Drops [tune: "I'm a Little Teapot" ]

Pitter patter rain drops (wiggle fingers to imitate rain )
Falling from the sky (wiggle figers downward)
Here's my umbrella (action of opening an umbrella)
Hold it high! (hands over head)
When the rain is over and the sun begins to glow (make sun with arms)
Little flowers start to bud (Kneel down )
then grow, grow, grow!!!! (slowly stand up)

The More We Read Together    [Tune:  “The More We Get Together]

The more we read together, together, together,
The more we read together, the better it is!
'Cause reading and singing and talking together,
Is how you learn the six skills for reading by six.
