Tell us about the works on exhibit. What’s the medium? What has inspired their creation?
The works exhibited are displaying black life in everyday form! From hair styles, to outdoor play, and cookouts. I wanted work that showcased our authentic selves, to help mold the narrative of black people being just people with cultures, traditions and an outpouring of community and love! All works are done in acrylic paint.
What was the most important thing you learned from being a self-taught artist? What’s something inherent in your art that couldn’t be taught?
The most important thing is to just go for it! Try new things, seek more knowledge, invest in yourself and enjoy the process. One thing that can’t be taught is confidence.
What do you feel is your role as an artist?
My role is to help tell stories. To help start conversations and open the world up to diving deep into any stereotypes we hold about cultures and to unpack it in hopes of a better future for us all!
What areas of your work or personal development are you hoping to explore further?
I’m hoping to explore my entrepreneurial side further. I’ve recently launched my own line of acrylic paints and want to pour into cultivating that!
What is your most important artist tool? Is there something you can’t live without in your studio?
My most important tool is my paints. I love using my own brand of paints, RAW Art Paints. It’s gives the perfect matte finish, and hues that I’m going for.
What books, movies and/or music have inspired you recently?
I’ve been inspired by Beyonce’s newest album. The way she genre bends and embodies confidence in trying new sounds is something that is truly inspiring to me!
