National Library Week 2025

At Johnson County Library, we’re inspired by this year’s National Library Week theme, “Drawn to the Library!” From April 6-12, libraries across the country will highlight the many ways people connect with their local library. Whether it’s a love of books, the thrill of discovering something new or the comfort of knowing you’re always welcome, there’s something that draws us all in.

National Library Week has been an annual celebration since 1958, when it launched with the theme “Wake Up and Read!” The event was created to promote reading and library engagement at a time when television and other media were becoming more dominant. Since then, libraries have evolved in incredible ways—expanding access to technology, offering digital programming and serving as a community hub for learning and creativity.

Special days throughout the week highlight different aspects of library impact:

  • Monday, April 7 – Right to Read Day: A day to advocate for the freedom to read, the freedom to access information and the freedom to find community.
  • Tuesday, April 8 – National Library Workers Day: A time to recognize and thank the dedicated staff and Friends groups who make our libraries thrive.
  • Wednesday, April 9 – National Library Outreach Day: Honoring the ways libraries serve communities beyond their walls.
  • Thursday, April 10 – Take Action for Libraries Day: A call to support and advocate for libraries and their essential services.
