Voting 2024

You must be a resident of the state in which you are registering, and you must be a U. S. Citizen.  If you are 17, but will turn 18 before the election date, you can register before the deadline on Oct. 15. 

Register by Oct. 15 to vote in the Nov. 5 General Election. Register online through the Kansas Secretary of State's Office.

You can apply for advance ballots from your County Election Office, or online through KSVotes (English) or KSVotes (Español). Each election requires a new application. In other words, if you request a mail in ballot for the primary, you will need to make a new request for the General Election. Voters with permanent disabilities are eligible to apply for Permanent Advance Voting (English) or Permanent Advanced Voting (Español), and return to their County Election Office. Ballots begin mailing Oct. 16. 

There are several ways to return your completed advance ballot: 

• If you mail your ballot, it must be postmarked no later than 7 p.m. on Nov. 5 and received by the election office by Nov. 8. 
• You may return your completed ballot at any open advance polling locations (see section below) between Oct. 19 – Nov. 4.  
• You may return your completed ballot at your designated polling location on Election Day, Nov. 5, during polling hours. 
• Johnson County Election Office has installed several ballot drop off boxes around the county. Ballots may be returned by drop off boxes beginning Oct. 19.

    • Spring Hill Library - 109 S Webster St, Spring Hill 
    • Johnson County Northeast Offices - 6000 Lamar Ave, Mission 
    • Johnson County Election Office* – 2101 E Kansas City Rd, Olathe (this location is a drive through and is available 24 hours for ballot drop off.
       

Early voting in person can be done at several locations between Oct. 19 and Nov. 4, 2024. In Johnson County, a limited number of Early Voting In Person locations are open on the Monday prior to Election Day, Nov. 6.  Check the list of early voting locations in Johnson County for places, dates, and times. Please note that different locations begin advance voting on different dates. All in-person early voting closes at 12 p.m. on Nov. 4, 2024.

Wyandotte County residents may check here. 

Each registered voter has a designated polling place. Polling places can change, so even if you have voted in the past, it’s a good idea to check your polling place for each election. Please visit VoterView to find your polling location. Polls are open between 6 a.m.  and 7 p.m.

Kansas state law requires you to bring a photo ID when voting in person. Acceptable forms include: 

• Driver’s license or ID card issued by Kansas or another state. 
• U.S. passport. 
• U.S. military ID. 
• ID card issued by a Native American tribe 
• Employee badge or ID issued by a government office. 
• Student ID card from an accredited postsecondary education institution in Kansas.
• Concealed carry license issued by Kansas or by another state. 
• Public assistance identification card issued by a government office. 

Exemptions from photo ID requirements exist for: permanent advance voters (voters with illness or disabilities); military and overseas voters and their spouses and dependents; and voter with religious objections who sign a  Declaration of Religious Objection (Form DRO) (forma español). Voters age 65 or older may use an expired photo ID.

You will need your Johnson County Library card or ecard and PIN to access digital newspapers. 
• 2024 KC Voter Guide by the KC Media Collective, in partnership with The Kansas City Star, has gathered all the information you need to vote in Jackson, Johnson, Clay, Platte, and Wyandotte counties. It's entirely free, and written in concise, easy-to-understand language.
• Ballotpedia provides biographical, current and past work of elected officials, campaign themes and more. 
• Factcheck.org is a nonpartisan, nonprofit site covering many topics of current interest related to campaign topics. 
• Politifact, a non-profit news organization, offers fact checking on current topics, candidate statements and claims, media personalities and campaigns. Users may also submit claims to have them fact checked.
