TBT: Find Some Shade
As you very well know, it’s National Umbrella Month!
Check out the looks on those faces. The two sitting across from one another seem to be appreciating a joke. One woman is content staring straight ahead for the photo. The man with his arm on the table is not amused. The dog? Totally indifferent.

Featured Artist Friday: Cryounit
Cryounit is the brainchild of Kolton Holbrook, whose deep love of science fiction and astrophysics have been parlayed into an enigmatic musical project. Holbrook is a self-taught musician and composer, and his music is a logical extension of his studies into Fermi's Paradox (more on that below). After two EPs, Cryounit's first full album, Paradox, is a must for any fan of industrial and downtempo electronic music. We're excited share our interview with Holbrook about hsi work and influences.

Now at Oak Park: Debra Payne
Debra Payne is a painter of rural landscapes and still lifes. Her work ranges from scenes of lush pastoral settings to renderings of houses to depictions of the disposable plastics and containers that consume our everyday lives.
What comes first – the medium or the message? Tell me a little about the work that will be on view.
For me the idea comes first, then the execution. Recently, I have returned to still life painting using disposable objects as my subject matter, which today is just about everything we own. From the clothes we wear to the food we eat or the car we drive, most everything we touch is headed, at some point, to the landfill. That’s a lot of potential subject matter.
Do you have a favorite piece?
My favorite piece is the one I’m working on.
What’s the most challenging thing about your creative process?
The most challenging part of the creative process for me is having enough confidence in my ideas and abilities to show others my work.
Who do you consider your main artistic influences?
I am currently looking at the work of any and all still life painters.
What books, movies and/or music have inspired you recently?

New Podcast Episode: Census 2020
Did you hear about the United States Census 2020? It's kind of a big deal! In fact, it's a requirement of our Constitution that every individual in the country be counted. Even if you are not a citizen, you are legally obligated to answer all Census questions.
We dive into the what, why, and how. We discuss the importance of the Census and the Library's role as a trusted partner in helping you to participate. History, geology, geography, it's all here. We even help you spot fraud:
- No one should be asking for your social security number
- Census forms do not ask for bank information
- You will not be emailed or texted by the Census
- No one will ever call you
So, did you hear about the Census?
