Game Change by John Heilemann and Mark HelperinGame Change: Obama and the Clintons, McCain and Palin and the Race of a Lifetime is a behind-the-scenes account of the presidential primaries leading up to the 2008 election of Barack Obama. It was written by two nationally known, and seemingly well-respected, journalists. John Heilemann is a correspondent and columnist for New York magazine. Mark Halperin is a senior political analyst for Time magazine. They interviewed more than 200 people to gather details about the campaigns of Barack Obama, John Edwards, Hilary Clinton, and John McCain. As one who closely followed the primary-related news, I found it fascinating to hear about the back story behind the actions and pronouncements of the candidates and their campaign staff that were covered by the media. At times, Game Change comes across as gossipy, and I did find myself questioning the veracity of some of the conversations that were “recreated” and wondering who would have served as the source for private conversations, such as the one that supposedly occurred between Bill and Hilary Clinton on a secluded beach while they were on vacation. As the authors explain, "All of our interviews were conducted on a "deep background" basis, which means we agreed not to identify the subjects as sources in any way." Not-so-flattering details are provided about the candidates, their spouses, and their marriages. The sordid details of John Edwards’ fall from grace are laid out. The rumored infidelities of both John and Cindy McCain are discussed. The ways in which Bill Clinton was a liability to Hilary’s campaign are explained. Somehow, both Barack and Michelle Obama, are able to largely stay above the fray. If this is an accurate portrayal of the 2008 primaries, then the logical conclusion is that the best of the candidates won the election.
