Curly Girl: the Handbook was recommended to me by a library patron during the course of a discussion about our own curly locks. When I started reading it, I was amazed to discover that many people dislike their curly hair and try, or usd to try to straighten their hair out. I have always loved the curliness of my hair and had thought that I was taking good care of it. Curly Girl the Handbook opened my eyes to a whole new approach to curly hair care. Different types of curls are described along with the different ways to clean, dry, comb, and style each of those types. The author, Lorraine Massey, founded her own chain of salons and hair care products that specialize in curly hair. Lest you think that the book is only an advertisement for Massey’s own products, check out the chapter on make-it-yourself potions. There are homemade recipes for lavender sprays, an exfoliating cleanser and various moisturizers and tonics. The recipes utilize various kitchen ingredients such as avocados, olive oil, lemons, ginger and baking soda. Tips are given for trimming your own hair, for curly kids and guys, "chemo curls", special occasions and more. Curly Girl the Handbook is the second, expanded, version of the book Curly Girl More than Just Hair--it's An Attitude : A Celebration of Curls : How to Cut Them, Care for Them, Love Them, and Set Them Free.
