November is National Family Literacy Month, a time to celebrate reading and learning together as families. It begins with National Family Literacy Day on Nov. 1, encouraging families to read aloud, explore stories and take advantage of community resources like their local library.
Reading for fun has lasting benefits at any age. Children who start early develop stronger memory, attention and mental health. Teens and adults can also gain from small, consistent habits, such as sharing a book before bed or visiting the library weekly. These simple routines can boost learning, confidence and a lifelong love of reading.
Libraries are essential partners in family literacy, offering free books, digital resources and programs for all ages. They bring families together through activities that make reading a shared, inspiring experience.
Literacy Resources for Everyone

For young children
Johnson County Library’s award-winning 6 by 6: Ready to Read program builds six essential pre-reading skills for children under six. Using colorful characters and playful learning, it helps them recognize forms and patterns, which makes it easier to distinguish letters and words.
For kids and families
Families can join Storytimes, explore Lightbox and BookFlix for animated read-alongs or take part in the Summer Reading Program, which keeps young minds active through themed activities and prizes.
For teens
The Online Teen Book Club offers a space for young readers to discuss stories, share perspectives and build critical thinking skills. Teens can also access the eLibrary for digital books, audiobooks and study resources.
For adults
The Library offers a variety of resources to support adult literacy, including in-person and virtual English language classes and access to Rosetta Stone and Mango Languages to strengthen reading, writing and communication skills.
For everyone
The eLibrary offers thousands of eBooks and eAudiobooks for family reading time. Families can also explore local literacy events, book clubs and volunteer opportunities to connect with other readers throughout November.
