Crewel takes readers on a journey to a world where everything and everyone revolves around a patriarchal society. Women are traditionally seen as homemakers and completely subservient to men who rule the land. The heroine, sixteen-year-old Adelice Lewys, has always secretly hoped for more and dreams of a life that she knows is outside her grasp. Adelice is no normal girl; she has the ability to Crewel, the gift to weave the very fabric of reality. For sixteen years she and her parents have managed to hide her gift from the prying eyes of the Guild. However, after accidently revealing her ability to Crewel, Adelice is ripped from her family and thrown into the Western Coventry. There she will learn how to advance her abilities and become one of the Spinsters, the only women who are given any sort of authority in society. Quickly after arriving Adelice draws the attention of a vengeful Spinster and her life is thrown upside down. Adelice must come to terms with her abilities as a Creweler and discover a way to break free from this restrictive society. This was very unique and I am excited to see where the author is going to go with the storyline. People who enjoy The Giver will like this, as well as anyone wanting a fresh take on a dystopian society.
