The Farm Chicks in the Kitchen: Live Well, Laugh Often, Cook Much by Serena Thompson and Teri Edwards

Mar 5, 2010

Farm Chicks in the KitchenThe Farm Chicks in the Kitchen is filled with recipes, craft projects, and personal stories aimed at those who want a little of the country life.   Recipes are divided up into four broad categories: Breakfast, Appetizers, Lunch, and Dessert.  The ingredients, measurements and directions are clearly presented, and most have interesting tidbits or helpful hints in the margins.  Each recipe also lists nutritional information, if you really want to know how many calories and fat that heavy cream-filled dessert has.

If you only try one recipe in this book, make sure it’s the Sweet Onion Tartlets.  These decadent crowd pleasers will have guests talking about them months after they eat them!  Other fantastic recipes include the easy to make Cherry Crumble Pie, the bold flavor of Savory Sweet Potato Soup, or the spicy Enchilada Soup.  None of the recipes are very complicated, but some can be time consuming.  (Try tripling the recipe for the onion tartlets – I needed 12 cups of thinly sliced onions!)  Additionally, none of the ingredients are obscure or hard to find.  In fact, other than adding fresh produce, I could make all of the above recipes with items I had on hand.  After checking this book out several times, I ended up adding it to my own cookbook collection!
