Popular Sookie Stackhouse author Charlaine Harris has just finished a trilogy set in Midnight, Texas. Midnight Crossroad introduces the small town and the people that live there; a vampire, a witch, a spiritualist, weretigers and angels, with just a few people thrown into the mix.
Midnight is an old town with lots of boarded up windows; it's a place where some secrets will never see the light of day. When strangers wander into the crossroads and start killing themselves in increasingly brutal ways, the Midnighters rally together to figure out why. Lemuel acquires help translating ancient books Bobo has found in his pawn shop. What he discovers offers no good news. Only through an ancient and embarrassing ritual, which Fiji the witch must perform, can they save the world.
Night Shift, third in the series, follows Day Shift and I recommend reading them in order to get the full flavor of this tiny town and its inhabitants.
Night Shift is a fun, light, supernatural read and my favorite of the three. You’ll have to read fast, though, if you want to finish before NBC releases the television series this fall.
