Sebastian Rudd, attorney at law, defends the impossible cases. The ones where everyone knows that the defendant is guilty of the most heinous crimes. The ones where no one else would even think of representing the defendant. The ones where the public, the victims, and the jurors hate the defense attorney as if he is the one who committed the crime. Sebastian Rudd is one of the few willing to represent the accused and ensure that they get a fair trial and sentence, even if it means putting his own life at risk. Sebastian no longer works out of an office, since it was destroyed by a firebomb. He now works out of a conversion van outfitted as an office and driven by Partner, his friend, legal assistant, and bodyguard. His current case, defending a young man with diminished capacity who is accused of raping and murdering two young girls, has him traveling with a police escort to and from the courthouse each day and staying in a different hotel each week for safety.
Sebastian is interested in this case because he feels like the police, judge, prosecutor, and the small town have already convicted the defendant without entertaining any other suspects or theories because the defendant is an easy target, and no one likes him anyway. Sebastian is bound and determined to bring the judge, jury, and public around to another point of view. Known to be somewhat of a "rogue," Sebastian is willing to go to extreme measures, even spending a night or two in jail on contempt charges, to bring the truth to light. Unafraid to work in the gray areas of the law and bend those laws as far as possible, Sebastian has certainly earned his reputation.
Those who have enjoyed Grisham's books in the past will most likely enjoy Rogue Lawyer. While perhaps not his best offering, it does present a different view of the darker side of the courtroom and the behind the scenes shenanigans that rarely come to light.
