Son of Stone (a Stone Barrington Novel) by Stuart Woods

If you are a Stuart Woods fan and enjoy his Stone Barrington character, I would recommend that you pass on this one.  I have truly enjoyed Stone Barrington but Son of Stone was a great disappointment.  Arrington and her son, Peter, are going to New York to visit Stone.  Arrington wants Stone to get to know his son a little better.  Peter is 16, a senior in high school with an IQ of 260.  He is the step son of world famous actor and director Vance Calder and he loves the movie business.  He aspires to be a great actor, director and producer.  Stone immediately recognizes his talents and soon Peter is enrolled in Knickerbacher Hall (a high class prep school for film students).  But young Peter is only 16, very talented and still has his step-fathers last name so, to alleviate any potential media frenzy, Stone has Peter’s original birth certificate sealed, has a new one created with a birth date 2 years early (making Peter 18 instead of 16) and, while they are messing with records, why not change his name to Peter Malon Barrington?  Are you kidding?  Really?   Everyone still goes to Elaine’s for drinks and dinner but Elaine won’t even sit and visit with them.  She must know that they are all nuts.  Peter only hears Stone tell him ‘no’ once and that is when Peter decides he wants to learn how to fly an airplane.  There are two ‘beginnings’ for good mysteries in this book but Woods fails to pursue either of them.  Basically, this is a book about a privileged 16 year old who gets everything he wants.
