In his second standalone novel after the award-winning debut Avenue of Champions, published in 2021, Conor Kerr once again presents the lives of Métis people in Edmonton​​, Alberta: his own home town. Of mixed European and Indigenous ancestry with roots dating back to the early years of fur trading on this continent, the Métis are one of three Indigenous groups recognized in Canada’s constitution. Kerr's own Métis background informs his writing: suffusing this novel, like his first, with sensitivity to the experiences and challenges of contemporary Métis living in modern cities.

chrysalids.jpgFirst published in 1955, The Chrysalids is a terrific science fiction novel that is too often overlooked.

Part of the reason for that might be ongoing confusion about its title. Author John Wyndham was an Englishman who died in 1969. When The Chrysalids was published in the United States, it was given the far less interesting moniker Re-Birth. I suppose we should just be grateful Wyndham chose not to publish under his full name, which was a mouthful: John Wyndham Parkes Lucas Beynon Harris.

nfb.JPGIf you are a film buff, then you already know that the National Film Board of Canada is serious about producing quality culture. Thanks to the internet, you can now see some of their selections from the comfort of your own couch!

Their current feature is a collection of bite-sized, lovely little hors d'œuvres. It's a short film competition held in association with the Cannes Short Film Corner and hosted by partner YouTube.
