Tara Sim's Chainbreaker is the second book in her "Timekeeper" series, and continues Danny Hart’s story as a clock mechanic in a world where time is controlled by clock towers. This novel delves deeper into the politics and time universe established in the word originally introduced in Timekeeper. Chainbreaker is a well-written and engaging novel that builds upon the foundation laid in the first book, with greater character depth and exciting action. The plot takes some unexpected twists and turns, with themes of love, loss, and sacrifice explored in a meaningful way with Sim's descriptive and emotive prose. Some of the plot and characters’ actions feel a bit contrived, and the pacing slowed mid-book similarly to Timekeeper. Besides these aspects, though, I would rate this novel 4.5/5 stars. I found this a well-crafted novel in an interesting and unique setting and would recommend it to readers who enjoy reading steampunk historical fiction and LGBTQIA+ romance.
