After Virgil’s parent’s divorce he finds himself in a small town in Florida where he sticks out like a sore thumb. One night he stumbles into the streets, bruised and bloody. Virgil was attacked by a monster in the forest. But nobody believes that he was attacked like he says. Suddenly, the most painful night of his life turns into something he gets constant ridicule for. Grappling with this and trying to sort out what attacked him is hard. He must be careful though; he doesn’t want to become a monster himself. But after that night things just aren’t right...

Squad is about Becca, a new student at Piedmont High who’s always been a weirdo. However, after she gets invited into the biggest clique at school, she gets everything she wants. Becca has new friends, new clothes, and a new start. There’s only one problem: they’re all werewolves, who prey on predatory boys. And when she’s let into the pack, and a boy dies, things get complicated.

Becca is a new girl in high school which is never easy. Luckily, the popular girls take her in and while they expect some things of her that she isn’t quite comfortable with, she goes along with it. Until it turns out there’s a reason the girls run this high school, and it’s not pleasant. Squad is a story that talks about the struggles of being out of place. It shows how conforming isn’t always the best idea and can lead to issues. It addresses themes such as patriarchal issues, LGBTQ+ representation, being different, and not being complacent. I rate Squad 4 out of 5 stars.
