Laia and her family have simple rules. Do good work, be on time, and hail the Martial Empire. Usually, they’re pretty easy rules to abide by. Everything changes when Laia’s brother gets arrested for treason, and her parents are killed trying to save him. Laia escapes, but barely. With vengeance in her heart and a vindication for saving her only family left, Laia goes undercover as a slave. As she gathers intel for the rebel cell, she meets Elias, a soldier in training at the top of his class, and who secretly hates the Empire.

Resistance is a historical fiction novel by Jennifer A. Nielsen. It follows Chaya Linder, a Jewish girl in German-occupied Poland. After her siblings disappear, she becomes a courier and joins a resistance cell. After a mission goes wrong, she is sent on a journey to save more lives at the Warsaw Ghetto. The emotional moments are the standout in this novel. The ending was bittersweet, made even more impactful by the impeccable writing from Nielsen.

Insurgent is an exciting and active action thriller by Veronica Roth. This book is about a sixteen year old girl named Tris, and her boyfriend Tobias, who escape the city and go to Amity lands (one of the factions, they value peace). They then escape those lands and return to the city and take cover in the Merciless Mart (the candor building, they value honesty), they kill their dauntless traitor leader and return to the Dauntless compounds.
