The House on Mango Street written by Sandra Cisneros, is a collection of vignettes that follows the life of a girl named Esperanza. Esperanza lives in a Latino neighborhood in Chicago, and throughout the book describes the struggles as well as joys of life. With each vignette telling a different story, Esperanza’s character growth is one to note as she starts off timid and shy and throughout the book journeys to find who she really is. These events all compile into her appreciating her House on Mango Street and realizing that she can be who she is. This book is a different style of book compared to most as it is a collection of vignettes instead of a book with chapters. If you enjoy reading short poems like stories, I would definitely recommend this book.
