Midnight in Chernobyl is a historical non fiction written by Adam Higginbotham. As the title suggests, this book details the entire Chernobyl nuclear meltdown in what was at the time, the Soviet Union, but now present day Ukraine. Higginbotham begins by explaining the precursor to this tragic event. This includes how the Soviet Union cut costs in their construction of nuclear plants in order to bring them online at a rapid pace. This included operators not being properly trained. The days and hours before the disaster. Then, how the operators tried to stop the meltdown but failed. The book then talks about the lackluster response. Citizens were not evacuated quick enough, and the Soviet Union tried to cover up the disaster by censoring the event from the news and no one knew about Chernobyl for days. The book concludes with the effects of this disaster, how both humans and the environment have been impacted. Overall, this book was so informative and probably the best book for those looking to learn more about this event. I personally now know a lot more about Chernboyl than I ever have and truly understand the extent of the disaster. I would definitely recommend this book not only to anyone who wants to learn more about Chernobyl, but those who like non fiction or are looking to read about a historic event.
