The Martian is a debut novel by Andy Weir, and it tells the story of how Mark Watney got off Mars with nothing but a few tools, his humor and wit, and his intelligence. This book is a rollercoaster ride of suspense and awe as we watch Mark deal with this situation from a survival standpoint and an emotional standpoint. Meanwhile, NASA is trying their best to rescue Watney while trying to hide the fact that Watney is alive from his crewmates, because they have concerns that his crew might never get over the fact that they abandoned one of their own. This book has a lot of science in it, and this aspect is actually very accurate and interesting. However, this book is also surprisingly funny; Mark Watney likes to make jokes because that’s how he deals with stress. The Martian can also get very emotional, and readers will start to find themselves get attached to Mark and his journey back home. This book is a page-turner, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise if you get engrossed in it. Some people might not understand the science in this movie, but I thought that Mark explained it clearly enough and I even came to admire his creativity when it came to attacking life-threatening situations. I love this book, and I hope that you do too.
