Who Was Jackie Robinson? tells the inspiring story of the first African American to play Major League Baseball in modern times. The book starts with Jackie’s childhood, showing how much, he loved sports and how he faced unfair treatment because of his skin color. As he grew up, Jackie went to college, joined the military, and then made history by joining the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. He faced mean fans and unfair rules, but he stayed strong and didn’t give up.

This tells the story of George Herman “Babe” Ruth, a boy from a poor family in Baltimore who grew up to be one of baseball’s biggest stars. As a child, he got into trouble and was sent to a special school, where a kind teacher, Brother Mathias, helped him discover his love for baseball. By the time Babe was 19, he was already playing professional baseball. He played for the Baltimore Orioles, the Boston Red Sox and became super famous as a home-run hitter with the New York Yankees.

At the start of the book we are introduced to a young baseball player named Roy Hobbs. He is an up-and-coming baseball prodigy with many scouts and professional players looking his way. Then unexpectedly the woman whom he is with shoots him which injures him badly. This sets back his career for more than a decade. Now, Roy faces trials and tribulations as he has to go through a baseball career as the oldest rookie in the league. Throughout his time, he starts to make friends both good and bad that impact him as a person and a player.

It starts off with an abnormally short kid named Matt Baker. Baseball is everything to him

because he doesn’t have to talk much on the field. Matt doesn’t like talking because he stutters.
