I read the urban fiction book, The Hate U Give, by Angie Thomas. In this book, the main character, Starr, sees her bestfriend, Khalil, get shot and killed by a police officer. Starr’s parents, Lisa and Maverick, help guide her through the legal justifications and hardships of Khalil’s death. Alongside Starr, her full brother, Sekani and her half brother, Seven, help her through the hard times seeing this death causes. Throughout the book, Starr’s intentions change from not wanting to speak about Khalil’s death to wanting to testify in court. But continously throughout the book, Starr wants to stay true to her backround and where she comes from. However, Starr has to deal with lots of threats that come to her when she talks about speaking out. Some people think it would be better to keep her quiet because they don’t want her spilling the neighborhood’s secrets. Which honestly wouldn’t be the worst thing especially if it means justice for Khalil. Starr also battles against herself and whether she is strong enough to testify in court or if she wants people knowing she’s the witness or not. A wake up call from one of Starr’s “friends” helps push Starr to be able to speak out and do the right thing for Khalil, even if it doesn’t work. In a way Starr does succed but not in the way that you would expect. In the end, those who threatened Starr get sent to prison for all the wrong they have done and Starr starts to feel better after the months of agaony the shooting caused her. From there, Starr plans on continuing highschool with her true bestfriends and focusing on never giving up and letting that happen again. The most compelling aspect of this book was to be on Starr’s side and to understand her point of view. Throughout this book, I felt a rollercoaster of emotions because of the ups and downs Starr was experiencing from the shooting, to Kenya yelling at her, from the aruging with Chris, to the family getting along with no secrets. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes drama and want to be taken to a different reading universe. I am not a reader and it normally takes me a really long time to read any book but this book took me no time at all and I flew through it because it never got boring. I would rate this book a 5/5!
