Exile from ShadowClan by Dan Jolly is a graphic novel extra of the Warriors series. This book explores what was happening in ShadowClan near the beginning of the first series. Following Firestar from when he was still an apprentice to when he became a young warrior. This book is from Nightpelt’s (Brokenstar’s previous mentor) perspective. Nightpelt has always had a bad cough, which caused him to eventually retire to the elders' den since he couldn’t hunt or fight. One day, Brokenstar hungry for more power and strength in ShadowClan, exiled Nightpelt and the elders from camp since they couldn’t contribute anything to the clan. Slowly, he began exiling more and more cats, and he began doing cruel things like sending kits who were only a few moons old into fights against the other clans. WindClan had allegedly killed Brokenstar's father, so he got his revenge and drove all of WindClan out of their territory for ShadownClan to take over. Brokenstar planned to soon take over the other two clans, too. All of the exiles had made their own camp, and were horrified at what Brokenstar was doing. The last straw came for them when Brokenstar kidnapped ThunderClan kits. Near the end of the book, horrible secrets are exposed about crimes that Brokenstar has committed. Will ThunderClan get back their kits? Will the exiled be able to go back to their home? Or will Brokenstar’s ambitions lead him to conquer the whole forest?
This book was an important perspective a reader of the main Warriors series would need. In the first Warriors series, the Prophecy begins, many readers, had thought of all of ShadowClan as evil. But, this book showed that although a good amount of them were pretty mean, many stood for good and some were just brainwashed. I had always wondered what exactly happened that led Yellowfang to move to ThunderClan and Nighpelt to become the leader of ShadowClan. The main Warriors series had provided an explanation, but this book showed it from ShadowClan’s perspective.
