Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys is a historical fiction book that takes place during World War II.
This book is told from four perspectives. Each is hunted by guilt, fate, shame, and fear. Each is
from a different homeland. Each is in search of a different destiny. But, they all share the same
goal: survive for those you love. Joana is a nurse in search of her mother. Florian is a Prussian
soldier with stolen Nazi treasure in search of his sister. Emilia is eight months pregnant and in
search of her boyfriend. Alfred is a sailor working for medals to show his love. When all four
make it onto the Wilhelm Gustloff, they must depend on each other to make it out alive. But, in a
world of so much war and lies, it can sometimes be hard to tell who you can truly trust. I like that
this book is based on historical events. I learned a lot about the Wilhelm Gustloff and its tragic
sinking. I also like that the book is told from four perspectives. It helps to build the story and
gives us insight into the characters' thoughts and feelings.
