Timekeeper by Tara Sim is a young adult fiction novel that explores the concept of time and its impact upon the books’ characters. Set in an alternate Victorian London where time is literally controlled by clock towers, the story follows clock mechanic Danny who is struggling to come to terms with his father's death and the repercussions of a clock tower explosion that has thrown London's time out of sync. His story also includes falling in love with a clock spirit named Colton and becoming embroiled in a treacherous plot to overthrow the oppressive clock tower system. Sim is able to build a vivid and detailed world, with her clock tower system creative and unique. Her character development is equally strong, from Danny, the sympathetic and relatable protagonist, to the secondary and memorable support characters, to the menacing villains. While the pacing slowed mid-book, the engaging characters and storyline kept me interested. I would recommend this to readers who enjoy reading steampunk historical fiction and LGBTQIA+ romance. This was an overall enjoyable read that left me with a desire to find what was next for the characters in the second book in the series.
