The Tower of Nero is the fifth and final book in Rick Riordan’s Trials of Apollo series. It follows the Greek god Apollo turned mortal Lester Papadopoulos, as he continues his quest to restore the power of the prophecy, take down the power-hungry Roman emperors, and regain his seat on Mount Olympus. I haven't loved the Trials of Apollo series as much as other Rick Riordan series, but this book was truly excellent. With plenty of cameos and appearances from other beloved characters, this book left me feeling incredibly nostalgic. However, Rick Riordan’s classic humor also shined throughout the story. I’m not typically a person who laughs out loud at their books, but I just couldn’t help it with The Tower of Nero. This book provided closure for Apollo’s (or Lester’s) story while also setting up future books and prophecies that readers will be anxious to find out about.
If I have one qualm with this story it is that, although I felt the plot was resolved at the end of the book, the characters’ personal lives didn’t feel as resolved. Apollo’s in particular. I can’t say much without spoiling, but essentially I don’t feel that Apollo’s journey is quite finished. Nevertheless, this was overall a very enjoyable read that once again showcased Rick Riordan’s unmatched ability to write characters that truly feel like real teenagers. Not just in how they behave and talk, but also in their thoughts and personal journeys. Granted, Riordan’s characters have battled ancient monsters and saved the universe a couple more times than your average teenager, but they still feel like real people that you could actually meet and talk to.
I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars because though the ending left something to be desired, overall it was an excellent read. I would recommend this book, and therefore this series, to anyone in search of a mythological quest full of humor and friendship. The Tower of Nero is truly a delight.
