Beatrice has grown up in post-apocalyptic Chicago, where the community is divided into 5 factions, each focused on a different value. Candor values honest, Amity values happiness, Erudite values information, Dauntless values courage and Beatrice's faction, Abnegation values selflessness. But Beatrice isn't a very good member of Abnegation, selflessness doesn't seem to come naturally to her like it does for her brother Caleb or her mother. At 16, every member of the community undergoes the test to find out what faction they will choose to live in as an adult. Beatrice is nervous for the test, not knowing what it will tell her.
But something goes wrong during Beatrice's test, and the results are inconclusive, she is Divergent, exhibiting traits of several factions. And now Beatrice must choose between Abnegation and Dauntless, two seemingly opposite factions. Will she be selfless enough to choose Abnegation and stay with her parents, or is she courageous enough to forge her own path and choose Dauntless? All she knows is that no matter what she chooses she has to keep her Divergent nature to herself at the mysterious warning of her test proctor. What could be so dangerous about being Divergent?
Divergent, is an awesome adventure story with just the right dash of romance! I loved it from the first page, to the last! It moved just a little fast, I wish there had been a few more months covered (even in just a brief chapter or summary) it is a little unbelievable that this all happens in about a month, but otherwise I loved it! It was the first book since Hunger Games that I literally couldn't put down and stayed up late to read!
