Sula is the child of a small town in Ohio, of a complicated family past, of racial inequality,
of motherhood, and of a burning desire to see the world for herself. Years after an abrupt
disappearance from her childhood hometown, Sula returns and meets her former best friend -
Nel. Their lives have been so different since their separation, yet they meet once again and
immediately reconnect. However, their vastly different lives will lead to unique consequences for
each of them and only time will tell who made the right choice - to stay or to go?
This book had some really interesting morally gray characters and plot points. It also
provided an interesting way to learn about Black America of the past. However, sometimes I
found myself lost in the dreamlike prose and unable to focus on the story or the underlying
themes. The writing was very beautiful but also hard to understand at times. Regardless, I
would still recommend this to pretty much anyone and I would give it three out of five stars.
