Alex & Eliza, by Melissa de la Cruz, tells the story of Alexander Hamilton and Eliza Schuyler’s

romance. Set in the late eighteenth century, Eliza is the daughter of a high standing family that

has lost most of their money. She meets Alexander, a poor young soldier from the West Indies,

at her family’s ball. The two immediately disagree and separate as enemies. As one of three

oldest daughters, it is Eliza’s duty to bring her family back to its former legacy by marrying rich.

However, she and Alex reconnect when she goes to stay with her Aunt Gertrude. As the two

form a connection, they fall deeper and deeper in love.

This book was a pleasure to read. The dialogue was witty and funny, and despite being a

historical novel it still felt modern and refreshing. As someone who used to be a big Hamilton

fan, this book was lots of fun to read as it elaborates a lot more on Alex and Eliza’s history.

While this book definitely has many fictional aspects, it’s pretty historically accurate. And if you

love this book, it has two more sequels you can read. I would give it a 5/5.
