Summary:
Where the Crawdads Sing is a 2018 coming-of-age murder mystery novel by Delia Owens. Kya is a young poor girl whom most refer to as the “marsh girl”. She never grew up with anything, not even shoes on her feet. Her family abandoned her at a young age and left her alone with her pa. Kya was forced to learn how to survive in such a big world. As Kya grew she learned how to be alone: just her and the marsh she lived on. That is until Tate came along. An educated boy from the town outside of her small world found her and he learned to love the “marsh girl”. Tate learned that Kya was more than the name the town created for her and she had a voice of her own, a voice beyond the marsh.
Opinion:
This is one of the best coming-of-age novels I have ever read. Delia Owens truly outdid herself when she wrote Where the Crawdads Sing. I really enjoyed the light-hearted moments, but also the powerful lessons the book held. It does mention scenes of SA, but it is necessary to tell the story of Kya and so many others. When you read this book, you will not only get a coming-of-age novel but a little bit of romance and a murder mystery. This book truly was the whole package deal. I also recommend this book if you are in a book club and searching for your next group read. I read this with a few people and we enjoyed talking about it after. The book also includes recipes you can make straight from the pages! Personally, my book club had a lot of fun eating the dishes from the book and watching the movie after. However, any bookworm can confirm, the book is always better than the movies!
