Jerry Spinelli’s Stargirl is a story about a teenage girl named Stargirl. She has been homeschooled all her life and is sort of the unusual type. Stargirl starts attending Mica High School, quickly settling in as a peculiar student. Leo, just an ordinary student, is interested in her due to her unusualness. The book follows Stargirl’s life in high school through Leo’s perspective. It features much character transformation. Spinelli’s overall message that he’s trying to give the reader is that everyone must be themselves, it’s never good to try and be someone who you know you aren’t.
In my opinion, I would give this book 4 stars. I thought it had a powerful message about one’s identity. Through Stargirl’s high school experience, it showed that if you stay yourself then you will find success. I would recommend this book to any middle or high school student because it has a relatable story and I think everyone comes across someone who is even a little bit like Stargirl at some point in their life.
