Lord of the Flies by William Golding is a classic novel that explores the dark aspects of human nature. The story begins with a group of British boys stranded on a deserted island after their plane crashes during wartime. Initially, they attempt to establish order and rules, electing a leader, Ralph. However, as the boys' primal instincts and power struggles take over, chaos ensues, and they split into two factions: one led by Ralph, emphasizing civilization and rescue, and the other by Jack, focusing on hunting and indulging in savagery. The novel goes into themes of morality, the loss of innocence, and the capacity for evil in human beings, ultimately leading to a tragic conclusion.
One of the most compelling aspects of Lord of the Flies is its exploration of the darker side of human nature. The growth of the boys into savagery and chaos on the isolated island is a powerful portrayal of how the absence of societal norms and adult authority can reveal the innate brutality and primal instincts within us. The book is also an allegorical tale, using the boys' struggle for survival to reflect on the larger complexities of human society and the fine line between civilization and savagery. The only disappointment I had with this book is that this book felt too savage if it had actually happened. I feel like in this day and time kids wouldn’t start to go against each other and actually try to work together to escape. However, there is still the possibility that this could happen. I would recommend Lord of the Flies to those who enjoy intense literature. It's good for people who appreciate allegorical and philosophical works, as well as those interested in exploring the complexities of human behavior and the dynamics of group psychology. However, I wouldn’t recommend it to everyone as this book deals with mature themes and might not be suitable for everyone. Nonetheless, for those willing to cope with its dark themes, "Lord of the Flies" remains a timeless and haunting exploration of the human condition. I give this book a 4 out of 5.
