In George Orwell’s 1984, society is constantly being manipulated by the government, to the extent that people can’t even have a conversation full of individual thought. Individuals are forced to hide their true intentions behind a facade containing praise for the totalitarian-style government. In fact, the manipulation present in the dystopian world prevents individuals from creating bonds. I didn’t think I’d be able to relate to this novel, yet as I read on I noticed that the government's surveillance and control of all human interactions was similar to the COVID-19 pandemic as both events prohibited individuals from creating long-lasting relationships with others. I enjoyed reading this book, although it started off pretty slow. I think if you give this book a chance, you’ll find that it perfectly summarizes the dangers of censorship and the need for freedom and individuality.
