The Giver by Lois Lowry is a fiction novel that is centered around Jonas, who lives in a futuristic but dystopian society. A society where there are no emotions, color, music etc. Everyone lives the same, dresses the same, behaves the same and are assigned jobs as opposed to real life where someone would apply and interview for one. Jonas is nearing the age of 12, where each individual receives their first work assignment. On the day of the ceremony, Jonas is given the role of the Receiver of Memory. The Receiver of Memory is the only individual in the society who can feel real emotions, see color, hear music and retains the memories of the past, the memories that the leaders of the society sought to eliminate as they feared it would prevent them from creating a perfect society. Upon learning of these memories, Jonas is faced with either letting things remain the same as they always have been and bear the pain of the memories, or release the memories back into the world. This book follows the treacherous journey of Jonas and is definitely a classic. I would highly recommend this book to anyone as it not only is very well written, but really resonates with the reader. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and it was only of my favorite books of all time.
