The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is an autobiography penned by Douglass as he recounts his life in slavery and his escape to freedom. This book offers a first hand view from someone who had to bear the harsh conditions of being a slave. Douglass starts off with being separated from his mother at a very young age and begins to work on plantations. Throughout his life as a slave, he moves to a plethora of different plantations with different plantation owners. At one point, he even moves to the city of Baltimore to become a servant for a family where he learns to read, albeit secretly. Finally, he recounts his escape to freedom in the North and his feelings of feeling lost and scared as he navigates the unknown. This book is truly a wonderful reflection of the events of the time and personally what stood out to me was how Douglass did not describe how he escaped in order to protect those who choose to use the same escape route. This is overall a very informative read, and as this is more of a journal, I think Douglass does a wonderful job of describing his life.
