The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave is a suspenseful novel that follows the story of Hannah, a woman who is suddenly thrust into a world of uncertainty and secrets when her husband disappears, leaving behind a note with the enigmatic message, "Protect her." As she delves into her husband's past and builds a relationship with his teenage daughter, Bailey, Hannah unravels a web of deception and hidden truths that will test her strength and determination. The novel explores themes of love, trust, and the lengths to which one will go to protect the people they care about, making it a gripping and emotional thriller.
One of the most compelling aspects of the book is the suspenseful and mysterious storyline. The enigmatic message left by Hannah's husband and the gradual unraveling of the secrets surrounding his disappearance keep readers engaged and eager to uncover the truth. The strong character development, particularly the relationship between Hannah and Bailey, is another highlight. It explores themes of family, trust, and resilience, which resonated with me a lot. I only had one disappointment and it was how during the very intense scenes with a lot of drama they pace it very slowly and it stretches the intense scene out too much. I would recommend this book to those who enjoy domestic thrillers with strong female protagonists, complex family dynamics, and a blend of mystery and emotional depth are likely to appreciate this book. It's a great choice for those who love intriguing stories with well-drawn characters and some psychological intrigue. I give this book a four out of five stars.
