Taking place in a dystopian society, protagonist Kathy takes the role of a carer who helps donors. Purposely vague, author Kazuo Ishiguro unmasks the history, the memories, and the truth about Hailsham - the school Kathy and her friends are raised in. During her time there, we learn a lot about Kathy’s personality and mentality, getting detailed descriptions of her favorite events and amusing stories about her friends. Overtaken by curiosity and suspicion, she and Tommy (a best friend) search for the unanswered questions about their upbringings that were so quickly dusted off in their youth. Although this wasn’t my favorite read, it was very interesting to experience a story told in 1st person, yet having the majority of the book focused solely on memories. I’d recommend this book to anyone who enjoys literary science fiction with some romance as well.
