Tiny Cooper is a character in David Levithan's book Will Grayson, Will Grayson. He is flamboyant and emotional, and he spends that novel writing and then performing a musical of his life. Hold Me Closer is that musical, written in theater script format.
David Levithan is one of my favorite authors (Every Day is AMAZING!) I thoroughly enjoyed Will Grayson, Will Grayson. I liked Tiny Cooper in that story - a lot. I enjoyed his flamboyancy and his emotional honesty - "Here I am, love me please!!!" But I struggled with this book, perhaps because I am not a musical person. I could picture some of the scenes extremely well in my head and those scenes I loved. I felt Tiny's emotion as he spoke to the audience. I appreciated very much his narratives to the reader, but the music lost me. I can't read words and put music to them in my head, which jars me out of the story. If this story were to make it to a stage, I would without doubt buy tickets to view it! Reading it just didn't work for me, but I believe that's more my shortcoming in terms of reading a musical script than the fault of the book.
If you read Will Grayson, Will Grayson and liked Tiny Cooper, and if you can read a musical script and hear the music, then definitely consider giving this book a try!
