Crank by Ellen Hopkins is a compelling novel that dives into the harrowing world of addiction through the eyes of Kristina Snow, a high school girl who becomes entangled in the dangerous allure of meth, also known as "crank." As Kristina's experimentation with drugs intensifies, she transforms into her alter ego, "Bree," leading her down a path of self-destruction, fractured relationships, and profound loss. Through poetic verse and storytelling, Hopkins vividly portrays the devastating effects of addiction on individuals and their families, offering a portrayal of the realities of substance abuse.

One of the most compelling aspects of Crank was Ellen Hopkins' fearless approach to tackling the subject of addiction. Through her unique writing style of free verse poetry, Hopkins manages to capture the chaotic and fragmented mindset of the protagonist, Kristina, as she descends deeper into the abyss of drug abuse. I wasn’t really disappointed at any point in this book. The book very much paralleled modern-day society and the struggles some teenagers go through today. I would recommend Crank to anyone who enjoys powerful and thought-provoking literature. It's a book that will stay with you long after you've turned the last page, sparking important conversations about battling addiction. Whether you're a fan of young adult fiction or simply appreciate compelling storytelling, Crank is a must-read that will show you the reality of the world.
