Caraval is a story of the love of two sisters, Scarlett and Tella. Scarlett has always dreamed of going to the magical performance of Caraval. The only thing stopping her and her sister is their cruel father, who hasn't let them leave the island. Now Scarlett's father has arranged a marriage for her as well. However, Scarlett's dream has come true, as she receives an invitation to the show. With the help of a mysterious sailor, she and her sister leave the island. As soon as she arrives in Caraval she realizes this year's game revolves around the kidnapping of her sister, Tella. Will Scarlet be able to find her sister before the five nights of the game are over? Are the sisters actually free from their father? Is Caraval really just a game?

There isn't much I disliked about Caraval. I was a bit let down because I came into the book expecting it was scary but it was more whimsical instead. There wasn't that much character development, which is probably because this is the first book in a trilogy. I would have enjoyed the book more if it didn't rely on its descriptions of the setting rather than the actual plot or characters. In the end, I personally loved Caraval as it always kept me guessing. If you think you know something, you probably don't. The setting will make you feel magical. The protagonist, Scarlett, is different from the typical female main character. Her biggest strength isn't her mind or how strong she is, but more so her heart. It was a relief to see a character who also overthinks and makes mistakes. The book, although just over 400 pages, was a fast read as well. Overall Caraval deserves four out of five stars. I would recommend this book to teens who love fantasy, a bit of romance, and mystery. If you loved the magical feel of The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern and the plot twist of The Inheritance Game by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, then you will love Caraval.
