Adam Silvera’s They Both Die at the End is a Young Adult, LGBT novel that recounts the final hours of main characters Mateo and Rufus’ lives after being informed that they only have 24 hours to live. Confronted by this daunting news, both characters are forced to confront their fears and regrets as they set off together to fulfill their final wishes. While the title itself is a spoiler, They Both Die at the End reveals that there is more to the novel than a traditional, expected happy ending—in Mateo and Rufus’ case, the connections and accomplishments they make in their final hours are fulfilling, and are their own “happy ending.” I loved this novel, it was heartbreaking, surprising, and joyful at all the right times; it was encouraging to the reader, as the story was motivation to live in the moment and to appreciate the time that you have. It was an uncommon story, but it was truly unforgettable.
