This heartwarming non-fiction book shows the unlikely pen-pal friendship between Caitlin, a young student from Philadelphia, and Martin, a teenage boy from a struggling family in Zimbabwe. Through their exchanged letters over six years, the two develop a deep bond that reveals their extremely different backgrounds. Caitlin wants to make a difference in the world, while Martin dreams of getting an education and escaping poverty. However, cultural differences, financial difficulties, and distance stand in the way of their bond. The two work to maintain their friendship, support each other through hardships, and find creative ways to connect despite the obstacles.
I Will Always Write Back is single-handedly one of my favorite books I have read. It is an inspiring true story that celebrates the power of human connection. This book truly showed me struggles that people go through in other parts of the world and how we can help. After reading this book, I’ve realized how inspiring and brave Caitlin was for helping Martin. I'd recommend this book to readers who want an eye-opening cultural exchange story or a demonstration of how small acts of kindness can have extreme impacts. The humility and perseverance shown by the two main characters left me inspired and wanting to help others as well.
