Shatter Me, written by Tahereh Mafi, introduces the main character Juliette Ferrars. She is imprisoned for a power beyond her control. No one can touch her without feeling pain. When unexpectedly released, she must navigate a world different from the one before her imprisonment. Some want her for selfish gain and others wish only to help her. It is up to Juliete to decide who to follow and how to use her powers. She might be the difference in helping the reestablishment solidify their hold over their citizens or taking them down altogether.

Shatter Me is a dystopian novel that has a plot full of intrigue, suspense, and endlessly amusing characters. My favorite character, I’d presume along with every other reader who has read this book, is Warner. His character is so complex and as Juliette describes him once,” a walking oxymoron.” I am very excited to see his character development throughout this series and I loved every interaction he and Juliette had.

I truly wanted to rate this book 5 stars but the only thing holding me back was the writing style. While I think it was created and very poetic in certain parts, it seemed overdone in multiple parts. This disrupted the flow of the novel and made it hard to engage in some parts of the story. However, Shatter Me, overall, was an amazing book that I do not doubt that I will reread and recommend to many of my friends. It is very remarkable and while it is slightly unusual, it is so in the best way.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a dystopian novel with characters you are sure to love. I also would recommend this to anyone who loves a well-written morally grey character. While the writing style might not be everyone’s cup of tea, if you love vivid imagery and writing that is poetic I do not doubt that you will enjoy this story. It is relatively short as well so if you appreciate I quick read I would strongly suggest it. Happy reading!
