Summary: One for Sorrow by Mary Downing Hahn is a haunting tale of bullying and revenge set during the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918. The story follows Annie, a new girl at school who befriends the mean-spirited Elsie. Despite Annie's attempts to distance herself, Elsie relentlessly clings to her, leading to a tragic series of events when Elsie dies and returns as a ghost seeking vengeance. Annie must confront her guilt and fear while navigating the challenges of friendship, loyalty, and redemption in a time of widespread illness and societal upheaval. The book explores themes of resilience, collaboration, and horror simultaneously.

Opinion: The most compelling aspect of One for Sorrow by Mary Downing Hahn is its eerie atmosphere and the way it masterfully blends historical context with supernatural elements. The haunting presence of Elsie's ghost, combined with the grim time period of the 1918 flu pandemic, creates a chilling and immersive experience. Some plot points were very cliche and could have more depth within them. The side characters also didn’t provide much support to the plot line. I would recommend One for Sorrow to fans of ghost stories and historical fiction, particularly those who enjoy a good mix of suspense and emotional depth. It's perfect for those who enjoy a ghost tale with a strong message within it. I give this book a three out of five.
