Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Getaway by Jeff Kinney is the twelfth book in the series, and it takes the Heffley family on a much-needed holiday vacation that quickly turns into a series of comical disasters. The story begins when Greg’s parents decide to escape the stress of the holiday season by taking the family to a tropical resort. What should have been a relaxing getaway soon becomes a nightmare as the Heffley’s face everything from airport mishaps to stomach-churning food, and from creepy crawlies to sunburns. Greg, who had been looking forward to some fun in the sun, finds himself in one sticky situation after another, making for a vacation that’s anything but relaxing.

Overall, I’d give this book a 5 out of 5 because it masterfully blends humor with the chaos that often accompanies family vacations. Kinney’s ability to capture the relatable frustrations and unexpected challenges of a holiday gone wrong makes this book a standout in the series. The setting of a tropical resort adds a fresh backdrop for Greg’s misadventures, allowing for new and creative scenarios that keep readers engaged from start to finish. The illustrations are as witty as ever, enhancing the comedic moments and bringing the chaotic vacation to life. The main thing I like about this book is how it turns the idea of a perfect holiday on its head, showcasing the reality that even the best-laid plans can go awry. Greg’s perspective on the vacation, from his attempts to enjoy the trip to his reactions to the various disasters, is both hilarious and relatable. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Getaway is a definite 5 out of 5 for its entertaining storyline, laugh-out-loud moments, and the way it captures the unpredictability of family life on vacation. It’s a must-read for fans of the series and anyone who has ever experienced the ups and downs of a family trip.
