The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt is a book about a young boy named Theodore Decker, who is dealing with the grief of losing his mother in a sudden terrorist attack in a museum that his mom and him went to go see. During the terrorist attack that killed his mom, he steals a painting called The Goldfinch, which later becomes the only thing he has left of his mother. Once he moves in with his mother’s friends, the Barbour’s, he meets a bad influence, named Boris. He starts to fall down a bad path. He has another friend at an antique shop in his city named Hobart, who tries to lead him on a good path. As he grows older, he tries to keep the secret of the painting that he stole, as the object becomes more and more valuable, and many people, including his old friends, try to take it from him.
This book has many twists and turns and shows how people deal with loss in hard circumstances. This book shows dealing with grief in a beautiful way, where in the end, Theodore is able to grow from the pain. In my opinion, I really enjoyed this book. I feel like I really connected with Theo throughout his journey, and he was a character that was easy to sympathize with. This was overall a great book and will forever be one of my favorites.
